Areosphere and Atmosphere 2011

LOCATION 8:30pm - 12pm, Jan 25th at New Plymouth Observatory.

Areosphere and Atmosphere is a collaborative project between Nina Czegledy and Janine Randerson and the New Plymouth Astronomical Society. The project was developed at Banff New Media Centre and first screened at the SCANZ residency, 2011. The late night screening re-deploys scientific satellite images of the polar regions of Mars and Earth in synchronic movements projected on the observatory dome. In addition to the visual associations between the atmosphere and geography of the two polar regions, the soundtrack includes the multi-national nomenclature based on historical figures; gods and goddesses, royalty, celebrity or explorers that reveal our earthly aspirations for the exoticism of 'discovered territory'. While the audience waited for darkness to fall to reveal the digital projections, there was an open panel discussion between Nina Czegledy and Janine Randerson, astro-photographer Paul Moss, director of the New Plymouth Observatory John Calcott, the astronomical society members and the international group of SCANZ artists in residence.
