Remote Senses; Storms Nearby 2007
LOCATION Third Shanghai International Exhibition of Art and Science, Shanghai, China, in “Ecomatics and Geomatics: three stories”, curated by Danny Butt
This installation includes weather data collected from New Zealand from satellites NOAA-16 and NOAA-17 in the form of daylight processed images. The audio composition contains signals of transmitting data from satellite NOAA-17 in its highest pass over New Zealand, recorded by Auckland-based radio astronomer Tim Natusch. The control of meteorological images transmitted from space is reflected in the different data visualisation decisions from Chinese and American satellites. Some of the perspex screens are projected with images of extreme weather events; slips, floods and storms, sampled from New Zealand television news footage. The project empirically documents the perception of a current increase in local storms.
