Peace in Space 2005
LOCATION The Media Gallery, The Film Archive, Wellington
Converge 05, Christchurch Convention Centre
'Peace is Space' is an interactive sound and video installation for four hemispherical projection screens. The slow moving projected images are technologically mediated visions of terrestrial and astral landscapes. The circular screens reference the galactic equator; the imaginary circle on the sky formed by extending the plane that passes through the centre of the Galaxy. The forms are abstract and brightly coloured, suggesting worlds the human eye could not see without advances in technologies of vision: satellite images of weather patterns, the surface of planets or matter viewed under a microscope.
Audio artist Jason Johnston's sound track, references Russian composer Alexander Scriabin's symphony 'Prometheus, The Poem
of Fire'. The different colour casts and level of activity of the screens relate to different sections of Scriabin's symphony.
